On the Origin of this Edition...

Having studied many versions of the Tao, I began to put them side by side and compare their differences. To my suprise, the more editions studied, the more I found what appeared to be discrepancies. Sometimes, verses would present completely different pictures from book to book, to the degree where they seemed to downright contradict each other.

My intention became to create a harmonious path between all of them.

In order to understand what the original writings were saying, I began to investigate the most direct translations of Chinese characters available from the original Tao Te Ching. I found great revelation in the process of breaking down the etymology of the words. In an attempt to make sense of the paradoxical writings put forth by Lao Tzu, I found myself existing in a paradox.

In putting this edition together, I wanted to be thorough, providing an accurate translation as well as commentary which might say something new, something never put forth in previous commentaries of the Tao Te Ching… And so I prayed.

At times, I had concerns that this edition might not hold the standard which is required of those who endeavor to work on holy texts. Neither did I want to waste people’s time writing commentary that wasn’t worth reading. Many times along the way, I found myself going within and asking if I was on the right track. The answer I kept receiving was: “Find The Way.”

It was as though Spirit of the Tao was not going to hold my hand, but rather it would support me in finding the Way.

The revelation of the Tao being a ‘virtual manuscript’ led to the title of this book becoming ‘The Virtual Way’. When considering the word “virtue”, we may be prone to think we are discussing “moral strength, high character, goodness; manliness; valor, bravery, courage (in war); excellence, and worth". Others when hearing the word ‘virtual’ may think of headsets with goggles and 360° digital experiences. It is our intention that the words ‘virtue’, ‘virtual’, ‘virtuous’, and ‘virtuosity’ are understood to mean both aforementioned understandings of the word.

In this way, the ‘Virtual Way’, is not purely a code of moral conduct which leads one to a virtuous life, but it is a code of consciousness programming within the holographic dimensions of our ‘virtual reality’
